At the Maryland Business Roundtable for Education (MBRT), summer is not a pause. It is a powerful continuation of learning, growth and momentum.
As this school year winds down, our commitment to students remains strong and present during out of school time. Through intentional summer engagement opportunities, MBRT continues to support students as they build skills, explore interests and strengthen their connection to their communities. These experiences are designed to help students leave the summer more confident and prepared for what comes next.
Beginning in June and continuing through select dates in August, the MBRT is proud to present Summer of Service, a series of opportunities in all five Next Generation Scholars districts coordinated by the MBRT program team, allowing students to give back to their communities while earning service-learning hours for high school graduation. Several opportunities are year-over-year favorites, like assisting with the Cumberland Police Camp in Allegany County or supporting food security through Kent County’s food pantry. Other service activities include specific learning opportunities providing insight into distinct industries. These include service days with Shore Rivers in Caroline County and event assistance in Wicomico County in partnership with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) AG Showcase. Service opportunities vary from single day to weekly options, as is the case with the opportunity to read to younger students at Dorchester County’s Public Library.
Why Summer Engagement Matters
Summer offers a unique opportunity for students to apply what they’ve learned in real-world settings. The MBRT’s summer engagement opportunities are an extension of our year-round support model, creating continuity between academic learning, skill building and career readiness. Through curated opportunities like MBRT’s Summer of Service, students gain tools and valuable learning experiences that they carry forward into the next school year and beyond.
By learning to lead through service, students strengthen empathy, teamwork and civic responsibility while giving back to the communities that support them. Students also gain skills that translate beyond the classroom with opportunities to sharpen communication and time management skills, needed durable skills no matter what industry they pursue. Engaging locally builds pride in their communities while gaining clarity about their interests and goals.
There is no one Summer of Service experience that is right for everyone. The MBRT’s approach allows students to choose opportunities that align with their interests, goals and availability. Throughout the summer, we encourage students to stay connected with their local MBRT program team members and take advantage of the opportunities available.
