Celebrating Engineers Week

Educators and employers have long named hands-on work-based learning experiences (such as internships) are one of the most beneficial ways to prepare a student for their career. The on-the-job training not only teaches students the technical skills of a specific trade but also assists them in finetuning their job skills, reinforcing the lessons they have learned in the classroom.

Many times, internships can be created and designed for students to not only complete their work-based learning during school hours but also earn credits that may go towards graduation requirements, especially in a CTE program. According to Blueprint for Maryland’s Future, 45% of the senior student body is to complete an internship or apprenticeship and earn an industry-recognized credential.

In Kent County, twelve students have recently been granted internships, four of which were sponsored by the Lions Club. These students have all been matched to a business in the realm of what they are interested in.

We’re thrilled for this new partnership with the Chestertown Lions Club to offer these internship opportunities,” says Kent County Next Generation Scholars, Aundra Anderson. “We’re providing a paid internship for NGS students while also providing community partners with a qualified student who has interest in their industry. I’m excited to see this program continue to build and grow.

Internship can also be helpful to students who have not decided what career path they’d like to pursue. The experience may shed light on whether a specific field is the right fit for the student. The connection with industry professionals is also invaluable.

The excitement to create more opportunities like this for students continues to build. Businesses in Dorchester County are in search of high-school students looking to complete an internship.
