MBRT Next Generation Scholars coordinators created day-long bootcamp sessions to be held in August at colleges throughout the state to help prepare our rising seniors for their future.
Each bootcamp will help students understand campus life by taking a tour of the college and meeting with current college students. During our recent NextGEN NextLEVEL event, we heard directly from recent graduates about questions they had for students such as what their freshman-year experience was like, whether morning classes were worth it and how to wake up for them, if they wanted to give up, what some of the hardships were that they faced, and how to enter a whole new world and make new friends.
“Through this invaluable peer-to-peer contact, our goal is to dispel myths for our rising seniors about college life and all it takes to get there and stick with it,” says Nona Carroll, MBRT chief strategy officer and Next Generation Scholars program director. “Every time our students connect with college students something magical happens and makes taking this next big step in their journey a little more accessible.”
In addition, each bootcamp will feature a session on how to finance college that includes information about scholarships and grants. All Next Generation Scholars will also begin the work necessary to apply to college, including starting the Common Application, drafting ideas for their college essay, creating their Federal Student Aid ID, completing a resume activity worksheet and choosing up to five schools they want to apply to this year.
“We know the college process can be a daunting one, so we look forward to helping students get started on their applications and essays and then load them up with other valuable information,” said Suzie Friedrich, admissions counselor at Washington College. “We feel like the Next Generation Scholars Bootcamp is an opportunity for students to develop their organizational skills, get their activities and interests in order and do some honest self-assessment. It should be an informative day!”
