As students settle back into the school routine, it’s a great time to consider future goals—especially for those focused on college and career pathways. For families connected to MBRT’s Next Generation Scholars (NGS) program, we want to remind you of an incredible opportunity: the Howard P. Rawlings Guaranteed Access (GA) Grant. This state-funded program offers financial aid to Maryland students who plan to attend a college or university within the state. Best of all, students can start preparing early by pre-qualifying for the grant as soon as 7th grade, and no later than 10th grade, though high school seniors are still eligible to apply.
The Howard P. Rawlings Guaranteed Access Grant provides significant financial aid to Maryland students from low-to-moderate-income households, making higher education more affordable and accessible. Pre-qualifying early allows students and families to begin financial planning well in advance, ensuring they are on the path to receiving state financial assistance when the time comes.
We’ve been working closely with students and families to help navigate the pre-qualification process for the GA Grant. For NGS participants, we recognize this process may feel complex, particularly in light of technical issues with the Maryland College Aid Processing System (MDCAPS) this year.
For students in grades 7-10, complete the Prequalification Agreement and submit to your local NGS specialist. Should you be eligible as determined by Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC), you will be invited to complete the prequalification section on MDCAP by February 15, 2025. For seniors, it is imperative that you create your MHEC account prior to December 1, 2024, and share your ID number with your local NGS program specialist. Remember, FAFSA is due no later than March 1, 2025. Stay tuned for your local Financial Aid information session scheduled at your school.
We’re here to help you navigate each step of the prequalification process and ensure all required documentation is submitted on time. Whether you’re a 10th grade student beginning the process to pre-qualify or a high school senior submitting your applications, we are committed to helping you achieve your college and career goals.
