Reflecting on the Next Generation Scholar program’s theory of change, MBRT posited that additional resources and strong interpersonal relationships would decrease the achievement gap and propel a high percentage of FARMS eligible young adults into higher education, if they so desired. After starting with an initial 7th, 8th and 9th grade cohort in 2017, strong evidence of program effectiveness includes:
- 26 NGS students from the initial cohort (2021 graduates and 2 county sampling) enrolled in college and received the Guaranteed Access grant.
- more upper-class NGS student are currently ‘on track’ for college – the class of 2023 demonstrated high proficiency compared to non-NGS students in passing English (91% versus 86%) and Mathematics (91% versus 83%).
- the undeniably important aspect of communicating that college is for all and realistically attainable for any student regardless of their financial circumstances at an early age.
