In Wicomico County, MBRT’s Next Generation Scholars (NGS) Program Manager Tashe Williams is helping young men take their first steps toward successful futures—and he’s doing it in a way that honors his father’s legacy. Williams’ journey began after the loss of his father, Norman L. Pitts, a 23-year military veteran and church deacon who always took great pride in his appearance.
“Today, as I stood before Pop Pop’s Suit Shop, I was filled with a profound sense of love. This shop is more than just a collection of suits; it is a testament to my father’s life and the values he instilled in me,” Williams reflects.
After a five-year battle with lung cancer, Norman Pitts passed away in February 2022. Inspired by a visit to Morgan State University’s “Career Closet” with MBRT NGS students – where students could select professional attire for job interviews and internships – Williams saw an opportunity to continue his father’s legacy in a meaningful way. Rather than donating his father’s clothes to unknown recipients, Williams, along with his mother and brothers, decided to create something lasting and personal: a place where young men could not only access professional attire but also feel the same pride that his father always took in his appearance.
With support from Heather Joslin, a social worker at Wicomico High School, Pop Pop’s Suit Shop welcomed its first “customers” in October 2024, inviting young men from the local school community to choose clothing that could bolster their confidence and sense of self-respect. Through MBRT’s NGS program, students at “Wi High” now have access to a unique resource that not only prepares them for job interviews and professional opportunities but also teaches them the value of self-care, professional presentation, discipline and community support.
Why It Matters:
Through Pop Pop’s Suit Shop, Williams is carrying on his father’s legacy by empowering young men to pursue their dreams with dignity and pride. This initiative exemplifies MBRT’s Next Generation Scholars (NGS) mission to equip Maryland students with resources and opportunities for success.
