Helping Students Give Back, Gear Up and Get Ahead

The Maryland Business Roundtable for Education (MBRT) believes summer is more than just a break from the classroom – it’s an opportunity to explore, contribute, and prepare for the future.

Through Next Generation Scholars (NGS) programming, MBRT’s Summer of Service connects students with hands-on learning and service opportunities that build on skills they learned during the school year and prepare them for what’s ahead. Each experience is designed to support students on their college and career journey – aligned with the goals of the goals of the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future with a focus on College and Career Readiness.

The MBRT program team has curated a list of local opportunities for students to give back to their communities while working to earn their 75 service-learning hours – a graduation requirement for all Maryland public school students. These hours help students develop skills in leadership, teamwork and empathy, all while gaining real-world experience.

Here is a glimpse at what’s happening across the state this summer:

Police Camp | Cumberland | June 9-13, 2025

Students will assist the Cumberland Police Department in running a summer camp, helping with daily activities and community building efforts while gaining insight into careers in public safety and civic service.

Environmental Stewardship | Cambridge | June 12, 2025

In partnership with Shore Rivers, students will kayak, identify local water species and clean up the park. This event will be held at Great Marsh Park and offers an immersive way of caring for Maryland’s natural resources.

Campus Beautification | Salisbury | June 23-27, 2025

Students will support their school community by planting, painting and beautifying the campus. This hands-on project has been a favorite in past summers, fostering school pride and teamwork, while leaving a lasting impact on their learning environment.

Why It Matters

In addition to building life-long skills, Summer of Service reflects the spirit of Maryland’s Service Year option, which encourages young adults to gain experience while preparing for their next step – whether that is college, career or both. By engaging in meaningful service, students build habits, skills and mindsets that support long-term success. These summer opportunities are more than just events – they are instrumental in becoming future-ready leaders.
