Regardless of their career path, we believe all students need a strong foundation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. One of the many ways MBRT increases STEM awareness to high school students is through our STEM Specialists in the Classroom volunteer program that delivers hands-on demonstrations of real-world STEM application.

MBRT relies on STEM professionals to volunteer and speak in classrooms across Maryland’s 24 districts. Our volunteers engage with high school students in the real-world application of STEM content and skills through experiential design.

STEM professionals deliver information about STEM careers, educational requirements, additional qualifications and how to develop a plan to prepare for them. Students gain this critical insight while participating in solution development of real-world STEM problems. MBRT’s learning-by-doing approach aligns with Maryland’s College- and Career-Ready Standards.

Our Volunteers Are Just Like You

We open our doors to STEM professionals who have the drive to make a difference, the desire to help high school students fulfill their dreams and goals, and the commitment to make the communities we serve better places to live. Volunteers don’t need to be professional speakers; volunteers just need to be themselves. And, we promise it will be one of life’s most rewarding experiences.

We Train the Trainers

MBRT provides support for all volunteers and each school they visit. Volunteers are required to attend one free three-hour training session wherein all necessary preparation is provided. STEM Specialists must also complete a 30-minute online training module to prepare their hands-on learning experience. MBRT connects volunteers with high school teachers to collaborate on the dates, times and concepts that would be co-taught. Each year, returning volunteers must recommit as well as refresh their training, which can be done virtually.
