It Pays to be an NGS Student

With college costs on the rise, identifying financial support is key to making a student’s future career goals achievable. The MBRT is committed to helping students across Maryland access financial aid opportunities through targeted workshops on FAFSA, Maryland state aid, grants, scholarships and more.

The MBRT Next Generation Scholars (NGS) Class of 2024 was awarded $4.3 million in scholarships and grants to further their education. Through the NGS program, students receive hands-on guidance to tap into some of the best financial resources available to Maryland high school graduates, including:

A need-based grant covering up to 100% of demonstrated financial need for eligible Maryland high school graduates enrolled in Maryland colleges and universities. In 2024, individual awards reached up to $22,100 and may be renewed for up to three additional years if eligibility requirements are met.

A need-based grant for Maryland high school graduates enrolling in state colleges, with awards reaching $3,000 in 2024.

Available to undergraduate college students who display exceptional financial need, the Federal Pell Grant offers financial assistance that varies annually. For the 2024–25 award year (July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025), the maximum award amount is $7,395.

Offered by local elected representatives, these scholarships are available annually to Maryland residents attending state colleges. Amounts vary by representative. (find your rep).

Awarded through state senators, these scholarships ranged from $400 to $12,948 in 2024. Total state aid cannot exceed an individual’s school-determined cost of attendance or $29,600, whichever is lower. Use the Find My Representative tool to identify your state senator.

> Institutional Grants & Scholarships (varies by institution of higher education)

Many colleges provide need-based or academic grants and scholarships that can cover up to 100% of tuition costs, with eligibility based on financial need or academic achievement.

> Local Scholarships (vary by location)

Scholarships are based on a student’s hometown or high school, with awards ranging from $100 to $20,000.

Please note that availability and eligibility vary by funding source. To qualify for state awards, students must maintain an active Maryland College Aid Processing System (MDCAPS) account and complete the FAFSA or the MHEC One App on time. The FAFSA for students enrolling in fall 2025 programs is expected to open on December 1, 2024.

All MBRT NGS students should reach out to their program managers and specialists to determine the best next steps toward funding their future careers.

Why it Matters: By providing access to financial aid resources like scholarships and grants, MBRT’s NGS program is helping Maryland students overcome financial barriers to higher education. These efforts empower students to pursue their goals while strengthening the state’s future workforce. However, financial aid is only part of the solution. Through the support of our partners, MBRT can offer additional resources such as college tours, career readiness programs and mentorship opportunities that complement financial aid and enhance students’ educational experiences.
