Helping MBRT’s NGS Tenth Graders Unlock College Funding

For many Maryland families, the dream of college can feel just out of reach. For students in Maryland Business Roundtable for Education’s (MBRT) Next Generation Scholars (NGS) program, there is an opportunity that may help to make that dream possibleThe Howard P. Rawlings Guaranteed Access (GA) Grant, offered through the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC), can cover up to 100% of a student’s demonstrated financial need at an eligible Maryland college or university. For some families, this funding can make the difference for their student between uncertainty and a path forward

Each year, MBRT works closely with MHEC to guide their NGS students through prequalification – a process that can significantly increase a student’s likelihood of receiving the GA award during their senior year. For this year’s tenth graders, the window to prequalify is officially open.

Prequalification is only available until June 12, 2026, and once the deadline passes, students cannot prequalify later. This makes early action essential for every eligible 10th grade NGS student in order to keep future pathways open.

One NGS parent recently shared how powerful this opportunity can be:

“The Guaranteed Access Grant through the Maryland Higher Education Commission is an incredible opportunity that gives families like ours real hope for our daughter’s future. Knowing that she has been recognized through this process and may be eligible for support makes the dream of college feel much more attainable. We are deeply thankful for programs that invest in students and help remove financial barriers to higher education. Our daughter is already excited about her future and has three colleges in Maryland at the top of her list. As parents, we are grateful for the support that encourages students to keep striving and reminds families that college can truly be within reach.”

To ensure every eligible student has a fair chance to complete prequalification, MBRT has streamlined its support for families:

  • All MBRT Next Generation Scholars staff participate in the process to ensure consistent communication, documentation, and data management.
  • 10th graders remain the primary focus, ensuring families receive the level of support needed during this pivotal year.
  • Staff provide 1:1, 30–45 minute prequalification meetings with students and caregivers to walk through documentation, explain requirements, and answer questions.
  • MBRT works as an aligned partner with MHEC, following all guidelines and ensuring accuracy so that each student’s submission has the best possible chance of success.

This coordinated effort means families do not have to navigate the process alone. The MBRT’s NGS 10th grade students and their caregivers are encouraged to schedule their prequalification meeting with their school’s MBRT NGS leader as soon as possible.

WHY THIS MATTERS

The Guaranteed Access grant is one of Maryland’s most impactful financial opportunities for college, and MBRT is committed to ensuring no student misses the chance to secure it. By starting early, families can better understand college affordability long before financial aid forms and application decisions begin, thus empowering students to pursue their goals with confidence.
