MARYLAND BUSINESS ROUNDTABLE FOR EDUCATION

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

MBRT believes that every child must have an advocate.  Each child must know that education is valued by one or more persons whose opinion the child trusts.  Parents are the best source of such support.

MBRT believes a successful education system must find ways to gain, then keep, parental and community commitment.  Schools should be open and receptive to parents.

Parents have the power to:
  • shape their child's aptitude for and attitude toward learning
  • fulfill their child's basic physical and emotional needs, thereby allowing learning to take place
  • reinforce the learning process at home by engaging their child in discussion, providing a time and place for homework, and planning enriching educational activities for the family
  • encourage hard work, responsibility and goal setting
  • press schools, school boards, and the government for academic excellence and opportunities for their children

No one has more vested interest in or more powerful influence on the success of an individual student than does the parent.

Because MBRT recognizes the strength and importance of a parent's voice, we include parents on all committees and in every initiative.  MBRT's Speakers Bureau has made presentations on high school standards and assessments to hundreds of parents across the state, seeking their input and support.
